Holy ghz Batman, 5.02 on a  3770k!

Y ou must ha ve de- lid- ed your chip! Are you water cooling?

What is your folding handle?

Just a little overclock. I could tweak it further, but that’s sufficient for now.

Nope - not de-lided, believe it or not...

Air cooled - modified Cooler Master EVO 212 LED. Fan orientation modified to draw air out the top of the cooler towards the 140mm (I forgot the size, but it’s big) fan that vents out the top of the case. Sealed the sides to draw all air through the bottom.

Handle: Full_of_the_sound_of_the_Gran_Fury_signifying_nothing.

I can’t get a good comparison between the two machines, but I think that my other machine, the 8-core/16-thread Xeon with the FirePro W7000, is probably doing more work.

These machines are cheap things I built up from various bits and bobs. The 3770K started life as an HP Elite 8300 CMT that was my Hackintosh until I toasted the MB trying to use a standard ATX power supply. I found a decent Gigabyte board on eBay and a case on CL and revived it and used the returned/markdown GTX 1080 I found at Micro Center . The 3770K came out of another CL purchase, a Micro C enter house-brand PC that now serves as my Plex machine after putting in the original 3770 from the HP 8300. The workstation is an HP Z420 that I picked up at a local recycler for a total of $200 with 32GB of ECC memory and CPU upgrade , with yet another CL purchase, the FirePro W7000, that was found for $50. Pretty potent machines for relatively little money. Lots of CL purchases and I haven’t been killed once...

Nice collection.

Just to be sure, it says your 3770k is at 5.02ghz, is that correct? That seems like a bit more than ‘just a little overclock’ when stock is 3.5....by my math that’s a 43% bump over stock. I was happy enough with the 20% bump I was able to achieve with a crappy ancient Tuniq tower heatpipe from my 775 days.

BTW, I don’t see you on the oppo folding team, you teamed somewhere else?

Thanks. I’m a bit cheap, so I look for solutions to get maximum bang for the buck. Of course I would like to have a faster machine for flight simulation, but these older machines do surprisingly well for their age. If I did build another machine I could take the GPU and the SSDs (running 8 right now (all at SATA III speeds) for about 4TB of storage), but would need a new MB, CPU and RAM. Since I’m currently unemployed that upgrade will have to wait a little longer. The cost of RAM is what scares me at the moment, especially if I want to keep it at 32 GB.

T echnically it’s overclocked to just 4.2 GHz, but with turbo   it runs as high as 5.02 GHz (instead of 3.9 GHz) during periods of high usage .

I am part of the Oppo team, but I just started an hour or so ago so I don’t have any WUs completed, nor do I have any points. In a few hours I would expect to show  up on the team’s board.

After about 36 hours of room  heating at full tilt, I’ve decided to throttle my machine back some. I have a feeling the electric bill thank me. Took the folding power on the client down to medium and turned down the curve on the pump and radiator fans some, along with throttling back my gpu frequency and memory speed a bit. I basically backed my RX590 off to RX580 specs, and it seems to generate a bunch less heat that way.

I saw your first wu posted.  Nice.  Once you complete 10 you’ll start getting the bonus points.

I’ll probably let these two run all night, but when I need to use the i7 I’ll pause folding. The Xeon will continue to run, mostly because that machine is currently running 24/7 for various tasks. If it gets too sluggish I may back down the power, but I’m still figuring out how this whole thing works. I wish I had a decent system for monitoring power usage, something that can look at the whole house instead of just one outlet. I should be able to log in to my power company’s website and look at the previous day’s usage, and perhaps let that be my guide as to how much power to consume.

Being unemployed I really should be more concerned about my power consumption, but this is a good cause, and in lieu of an actual financial donation, this seems to be a good way to help find a solution to a problem that is affecting almost everyone on the planet.

Indeed.  Whenever I do any sim racing or gaming folding will certainly have to pause.  Oppoing and the like with it going, even full tilt, seems to work fine.

I’m running mine on just the GPU. The VRs on my motherboard are garbage and were getting quite toasty trying to feed my 3900x at full tilt for extended periods. One of multiple reasons I’m not happy with my choice in Motherboard so I am going to likely end up replacing it once life goes back to normal.

Compared to something like setting up a monthly- auto debit to a cause or charity, this feels like being a more active participant in the effort.

If you were maxing out a 15 amp circuit on 110 single phase power, at .9 power factor and 10 cents per kilowatt hour, that would be about $110/month
